allie miks

(they/she/he)

is a Queer, Neurodivergent, Japanese-American performing artist, mover, and teacher from Los Angeles. allie creates art in a process-based method that centers collaboration with other creators (movers, sound artists, designers, actors, filmmakers, visual artists). using true collaborative process as inspired by radical Queer and BIPOC community organizing principles, the pieces that they lead into creation are never solely allie’s own. through the sharing of one seed to start with, together with the collaborators we find a generation of the work that feels genuine because of the personal connections created by everyone within the development of our art; it’s imperative to the work to lead with the possibilities by the people in the room. through the process of creating, allie facilitates a process that is engaging, safe, and lead with love and creativity; only then can we culminate a work that feels true. currently, allie is very interested in the use of character work as a part of developing movement; how can one person’s personality and choices influence the way they move? she uses movement creation to find release of an emotion, to understand humans and ourselves better, to play in, to write love letters, to reflect on a universal feeling and to invite audiences in with us. to allie, movement and the creation of art in community with others is the most liberating experience, and it is to be shared.

allie miks began their dance training in ballet and Polynesian dance at a young age and furthered their studies in high school through the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts in Culver City, where they trained in modern dance and developed an interest in choreography. allie continued to pursue her dance education by attending Santa Monica College before transferring to California State University, Long Beach where they graduated with a BFA in dance in 2019. collectively, allie has had the pleasure of performing in works by Rebecca Bryant, Julie Carson, Keali’i Ceballos, Melecio Estrella, Angela Jordan, Rebecca Lemme, Manuel Macias, Sri Susilowati, Mark Tomasic, Vanessa VanWormer, Volta Collective, and Sheron Wray. more recently, allie enjoys teaching Pilates and post-contemporary dance to people of all ages, playing and learning from their cat Jiji, and finding new crafting hobbies!
